flag for the pandemic
(after derek jarman)

Derek Jarman was a gay rights activist, filmmaker, director, and artist. His last film, called Blue (1993), premiered just months before Jarman’s death due to AIDS complications. Blue depicts a single image of the color Internationally Klein Blue, with a soundtrack of original music and musings from Jarman about his life. As he approached his death, Jarman dealt with the loss of his vision due to AIDS. Instead, Jarman reported that all he could see when he opened his eyes was this single shade of blue.

This photo series aims to recreate the sensation Jarman experienced leading to the creation of his film and his journey toward death. As a disabled, queer person, this work was an opportunity to explore the emotions I experience as I navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Playing with light, shadow, and color, I disrupted each idyllic snowy scene with a rectangle of Internationally Klein Blue.
